Self care and feeling beautiful in your 50's is different than in your 20's, 30's, and 40's. In some respects it's easier--our children are getting older, developing their own independence-- and we have more time for ourselves. The challenge is--at this age, we've become creatures of habit, and those habits may not allow enough (if any) self care time. I hope to inspire you over 50's to break free from routine and do something different...treat yourself like the beautiful Woman you are!!
Here are some of my favorite self care tips, and why they are important to feeling beautiful, after 50.
1. Exercise -
~Yes, I know, the dreaded "E" word. In our 30's and 40's, our goal may have been to stay fit and toned. In our 50's, it becomes more about staying healthy. For over 50's, weight bearing exercise is especially important for bone health. My favorite exercise is the "Body Pump" class I attend once or twice a week. Read more about it here.
You've probably noticed that high impact aerobic exercise is a little more challenging after 50. This doesn't mean you shouldn't do it, it simply means, don't try to keep up with the 20 year olds in your Zumba class, but don't give up the Zumba class! Scale it down, and listen to your body. Change up your exercise routine too. If you like to walk, consider hiking --do whatever it takes to keep you from becoming bored.
2. Find something that challenges you! -
~ A few years back, I took up ballroom dancing. I was single at the time--no, you don't need a man to go dancing--they are there! Dancing the Tango, Waltz, and Rumba makes me feel youthful and beautiful! If dance isn't for you, perhaps it's horse-back riding, painting, learning a new language, or taking a class in anything that scares you a bit. What I mean is, s t r e t c h yourself. This alone, gives you a feeling of accomplishment and confidence. A confident woman, is a beautiful woman, at any age.
3. Do something really nice for yourself at least once a week -
~ If you live near a body of water--a lake or the ocean, go there with lunch and a good book. There is something about being near water that is soothing. I've always dreamed of living by the water. Well, that isn't in the budget, so I bought a fountain for our back yard (pictured on left)... bringing the water to me! I put a lounge chair nearby, and it's my little slice of paradise.
My personal favorite form of self care is a full body massage. I get one every two weeks--my gift to me! You can get the same effect, by pouring yourself a glass of champagne, and taking a bubble bath, complete with lavender candles and oils. Apply a facial masque while you're in the tub, and let it rest on your skin as you relax your cares away.
Splurging on a new haircut/style or new color (or both) can make a huge difference in how you present yourself to the world. I added red highlights recently, and it made me feel Sassy! As we age, our styles and color need to change too. Softer hair color around your face is a great way to youth-ify!
4. Socialize -
~ Break away from the TV and computer. Be with people. There is a tendency to isolate as we get older. Resist! We need to be with others, laughing and sharing good stories--perhaps what you've just learned in the new class you're taking!
