I've worked in a beauty salon for over 35 years now, and I've come in contact with many women in that time. I see a shift in women over 50...sometimes they just seem fed up! Fed up with care taking, they grumble about their husbands, they grumble about their jobs, their house that's falling apart, etc., etc. Heck, I've even been one of them!
I believe, in part, the problem is....hormonal. Secondly, we're sleep deprived!
Our bodies change because of hormones and so does our attitude! Our tolerance level for other people changes drastically too.
I'm convinced hormone changes cause our sleep patterns to change. Personally, I will wake up for no reason, and not be able to go back to sleep for 1-2 hours.
Interrupted sleep does not a happy person make!
I've found that exercise is the best way to improve my mood. It's an endorphin thing. When I'm exercising regularly, I fall asleep easier, and sleep more deeply.
It doesn't have to be the gym. It can be dance, walking, hiking, anything that gets us up and moving!
Here are a few dietary suggestions that will improve overall wellness and help us to sleep better too, therefore reducing the urge to strangle someone.
- Load up on berries that packed with anti-oxidants blueberries, blackberries, cranberries and strawberries. They reduce the stress that assaults the cells of the body. So, “berry up” to reduce inflammation and improve your brain cell signaling.
- Avoid saturated and trans fats and choose olive oil instead.
- Choose foods high in Vitamin C red peppers, oranges, pine nuts, roasted sunflower seeds. These choices are Great for skin protection too, leading to fewer wrinkles and less skin dryness overall.
- Boost your omega-3s a beneficial fatty acid found in oily fishes, walnuts, canola and flaxseed oils.
- Spice up your diet with herbs that have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties turmeric (also known as curcumin), garlic, rosemary, and cayenne.

Yoga is a great stress reducer. I was in the best shape of my life when I practiced yoga, too. Thanks for the reminder Diane!
